Free cutting (free machining) steels are steels used for high-speed machining and offer excellent chip removal making them ideal for high-volume machine part manufacturing. The improved machinability in these grades is achieved thanks to the addition of several alloy elements. Some of the most important of these elements are sulphur, which helps the chipping, and lead which helps with lubrication during machining and prolongs tool life.
